Introduction to Everyday Technology Online

Hi there,

Welcome to the Everyday Technology Online module. We hope that you'll have fun working through it, that you'll learn a few things from it and that you'll show us some new things too.

Just to give you an idea of where your teachers are, here's a  photo of OTEN in Strathfield, Sydney.

This is how it looks inside. It's a huge open plan office. The teachers here work with 38000 students like you, all over Australia and in other countries too.

So what is everyday technology? I guess different people use different kinds of technology in their everyday lives. What do you use?

Listen to the short audio file below of a 15 year old talking about some technology he enjoys using. You can also hear Jody and Dee chatting about some of their favourite gadgets.

You can listen to a 21 year old talking about how he likes to use his mobile and an older person discussing computers.

The Everyday Technology Online module's got 3 units.

1. In the first unit you get to watch a short movie, then create a movie of your own. It's cool and it's easy.

2. In the second unit you'll see a photostory of a relaxation technique to use if you feel stressed out. Then you'll get a chance to design a relaxation procedure to share with us.

Unit 2 is optional, so you only do it if you want to. It's up to you.

3. In the third unit you can check out some different kinds of

art,

Unit 1 of Everyday Technology Online

Okay, to start off with there's a short movie for you to watch. Just right click on this link and choose "open in a new window"and watch it as many times as you want.

Your Unit 1 assignment is to make your own movie. This is a way for you to introduce yourself to your teachers in whichever creative way you choose. You get to be the director who chooses the background, the plot, the characters, the script, the music and the number of scenes. How good is that!

Hint: When you're making your movie, think of your audience (that's us, your OTEN teachers) and the type of thing it would be good for us to know about you.

Make sure your movie includes your OTEN number (the one that starts with N) so we know who you are.You can put your OTEN number on the title page of your movie where it says 'Directed by ...' if you want.  Email your movie to oten.abe@tafensw.edu.au

To make your movie, right click on this link and choose "open in a new window": http://dfilm.com/live/moviemaker.html
and you'll go straight to the DFILM MOVIEMAKER.

Make as many movies as you want to send to your mates.

Can you think of a good relaxation procedure for your Unit 2 assignment?  Remember that Unit 2 is optional, so you only do it if you want to. It's up to you.

If you have XP on your computer you can download photostory free. Right click on this link and choose "open in a new window". ( Download Photo Story 3 ) and use your own photos to create a relaxation procedure. When you get to the final step you can choose to save it to send as an email to oten.abe@tafensw.edu.au Remember to include your name and N number with it so that we know who you are.

If you don't have XP, just email us an attachment(oten.abe@tafensw.edu.au ) with a step by step procedure like the one above. Use photos if you have them (keep file size small).

Hint:Try your relaxation procedure out on a couple of mates to make sure it's super clear and easy to understand before you send it. Thanks!

We hope you've enjoyed this unit. If you've got a few more minutes, please give us your feedback about Unit 2 by right clicking on the link below and answering a few short questions. Remember to open in a new window.  http://faveotenfeedback.blogspot.com/
